The first Business on Rails Show was held in 1998, the year in which the concession the freight railways in Brazil was completed and investments of the new operators began. Then emerged or were privatized, America Latina Logística, Ferrovia Tereza Cristina, Ferrovia Paraná, Ferrovias Bandeirantes, Ferrovia Novoeste, MRS Logística, Ferrovia Centro Atlântica, EF Vitória a Minas, Cia. Ferroviária do Nordeste and EF Carajás. Ferronorte was already privately operated and the Norte Sul Railway is still in process of privatization. The set comprises 12 railways.

The late 90's also faced the invasion of popular automobiles into the streets of Brazilian cities, which was a result of the stabilization price policy of the Brazilian economy. The urban traffic has significantly worsened and had as an answer investment programs in metropolitan trains and subways by several state governments.

The 1998 Show was held at the Hilton Hotel and at the Júlio Prestes Railway Station. As the event grew, it was necessary have it moved to the São Paulo Museum of Technology in 1999 and 2000. Afterwards, in 2001, to São Paulo Room and Júlio Prestes Railway Station again. In 2002, 2003 and 2004 the event was held at ITM Expo, in São Paulo.

The 2006 edition of Business on Rails show had more than 6.000 professionals from railroad operators, shippers, logistic service providers, government officers and other parties interested in the railway sector, who visited 146 exhibitors from 17 countries – South Africa, Germany, Argentina, Canada, China, Spain, United States, France, Italy, Japan, India, South Korea, Sweden, Austria, Finland, Mexico and Brazil. Three of these countries - France, South Africa and Spain - went further and took the initiative to organize their companies into pavilions.
